Breast Health Screening Program : Empowering Communities with Early Detection, Education & Innovation

Program Overview: Early Detection. Local Action. Lasting Impact.

Breast cancer remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths among women in Rwanda—largely due to late detection, misinformation, and limited access to screening services. At BCIEA, we’re changing that narrative.

Our Breast Health Screening Program is a community-driven, AI-powered initiative that brings early detection services directly to the people—especially women in underserved rural areas. By combining cutting-edge technology, skilled local health workers, and powerful community education, we’re building a scalable model that saves lives.

> Goal: To screen 1,000 women in our pilot phase and establish a sustainable national program.

AI-Powered Screening: Smart Tools for Stronger Communities

At the heart of our program are portable, AI-powered breast screening devices—revolutionary tools that offer mammogram-level accuracy without the need for hospital-based clinicians or large infrastructure.

These devices:

- Use AI to detect abnormalities with precision.

- Are mobile, fast, and non-invasive.

- Allow trained staff to conduct screenings in both clinical and community settings.

- Enable real-time results and referrals.

By eliminating the need for traditional mammography facilities, we empower our team to bring screenings directly to women—whether at our headquarters, outreach events, or mobile clinics.

> High impact, low barrier. Early detection made accessible.

Training for Impact: Empowering Nurses & Community Health Workers

Technology alone is not enough—we need trained hands and compassionate hearts to bring this program to life.

Our program includes a dual-tier educational component designed to equip:

- Nurses with advanced clinical breast health training and technical operation of the AI devices.

- Community Health Workers (CHWs) with culturally sensitive, foundational education in breast health awareness, outreach, and community mobilization.

Both tracks include:

- E-learning modules (available in Kinyarwanda, English & French)

- In-person hands-on workshops

- Assessment and certification

- Ongoing mentorship and supervision

This ensures that every woman screened is not only cared for but also educated, supported, and connected to further resources when needed.

> Building a community of Breast Health Specialists—by the community, for the community.

Seamless Access, Real-time Impact

Using QR codes embedded in our awareness materials—including our graphic novel series—we offer direct pathways for women to:

- Pre-register for screenings

- Schedule appointments

- Receive education and resources

- Get connected to care and follow-up

With Rwanda’s high mobile phone penetration, these digital touchpoints ensure that access to information and services is just a scan away.
